The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued an urgent warning regarding a significant flood risk across the country, as Rivers Niger and Benue approach their peak levels. This development is compounded by the surging water volumes in several dams nationwide, including those at critical overflow points.

In a statement released on Thursday, signed by NiHSA’s Director-General, Umar Mohammed, the agency confirmed that tributaries such as the Rima, Kaduna, and Gongola Rivers have also reached alarming levels, heightening concerns of imminent flooding downstream. NiHSA has been closely monitoring the situation, which could significantly impact communities already grappling with seasonal floods caused by the peak of the rainy season.

The agency highlighted that the Kainji Dam is already spilling excess water, with the reservoir level recorded at 138.69 meters. Communities near the Kainji Dam, including Kainji town, Patigi, New Bussa, Borgu, and Mokwa, along with others in Niger and Kwara states, are on high alert. Similarly, the Jebba Dam is spilling excess water, putting nearby towns at risk, including Jebba, Gungu, Gana, Fanga, Bele, Bere, Gaba, Baro, and other communities along River Niger in Kwara and Kogi States.

Another key development concerns the Goronyo Dam, which is spilling water at its maximum rate, severely impacting nearby Sokoto communities, particularly Goronyo, Wamako, Shinaka Yerimawa, and surrounding areas. Kiri Dam is also spilling excess water, with flooding observed in Adamawa communities such as Kiri, Tallum, Banjiram, Purokayo-Lakumna, and Shelleng.

NiHSA further noted that although the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon is not spilling, the combination of heavy rainfall and internal runoff from its catchment area is causing flooding in parts of Adamawa State, particularly affecting Yola North and South, Girei, and Numan.

In light of the current high reservoir levels and the possibility of further flooding, NiHSA has urged all communities along the Rivers Niger and Benue to remain vigilant. “Given the current high river flows, it is crucial for downstream communities to take proactive steps to protect lives and property. NiHSA is working closely with dam authorities to minimize the impact of possible flooding,” the statement read.
