An operative of the South-West Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, has been arrested after allegedly shooting a civilian during an operation to apprehend two individuals involved in a violent altercation in Oyo State.
The incident occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on Thursday in Ayemojuba Kosigi village, near Saki, according to police sources cited by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama.
The suspect, identified as Abdulafeez Alabi, was reportedly responding to a disturbance when he attempted to arrest two men said to be engaged in a fight. During the operation, his firearm allegedly discharged accidentally, with the bullet striking a bystander identified as 35-year-old Jamiu Adesina.
The victim sustained serious gunshot injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. Authorities have yet to provide an official update on his condition.
Police sources said the Amotekun operative was immediately taken into custody as investigators launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. His firearm has also been recovered and taken into police custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
The incident has renewed concerns over the handling of firearms during security operations and the need for strict adherence to operational protocols by personnel of local security outfits.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine whether the shooting was purely accidental or if any criminal negligence was involved. The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine whether further legal action will be taken against the operative.
