Armed gunmen have killed a retired Nigerian Army officer and abducted a woman during a deadly overnight attack in Nasarawa State, underscoring the persistent insecurity affecting communities across Nigeria’s North Central region.
The attack, which occurred in a community within Nasarawa State, left residents in shock as heavily armed assailants reportedly stormed the area, fatally shooting the retired military officer before whisking away a female resident to an undisclosed location.
Local sources said the attackers operated for several minutes, forcing residents to flee for safety as sporadic gunfire echoed through the community. The abducted woman is believed to have been taken into nearby forests, where criminal gangs have frequently established hideouts.
Security personnel were later deployed to the area, while efforts have reportedly begun to rescue the victim and track down those responsible for the attack. Authorities are yet to announce any arrests in connection with the incident.
The latest assault adds to growing concerns over the rising wave of kidnappings, armed attacks and violent crimes in parts of Nasarawa State and neighbouring states, despite ongoing security operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks.
Residents have continued to call for stronger security measures, increased patrols and swift intervention by the authorities to prevent further attacks and restore confidence in affected communities.
