Nigeria’s state-owned energy company has taken a major step towards expanding oil production into Ogun State, as a technical team from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) inspected the Eba oil well in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
The visit signals advancing preparations for the start of commercial drilling operations, marking what could become Ogun’s first entry into Nigeria’s oil-producing states.
Officials familiar with the development said the inspection was aimed at assessing infrastructure readiness, geological prospects and operational requirements ahead of full-scale production.
The Eba oil well is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to diversify crude output beyond the Niger Delta, boost national reserves and attract fresh investment into Nigeria’s energy sector.
Local authorities welcomed the development, expressing optimism that oil production would stimulate economic growth, create jobs and improve infrastructure across host communities.
NNPCL has not yet announced a definitive timeline for the commencement of drilling, but sources indicate that preparatory works are nearing completion, pending final technical and regulatory approvals.
If successful, the project could reshape Ogun State’s economic landscape while reinforcing Nigeria’s drive to increase domestic energy capacity amid fluctuating global oil prices.
