London, United Kingdom — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce a timetable for his resignation on Monday after holding discussions with his wife and family, according to multiple media reports.

The reported decision comes as pressure mounts within the governing Labour Party following Andy Burnham’s decisive victory in the Makerfield by-election, a result that has intensified calls for a change in leadership.

Several cabinet ministers are reportedly preparing to urge Starmer to step aside, arguing that the party needs an “orderly transition” to restore confidence ahead of future political challenges.

Reports suggest that around 100 Labour MPs have already called for the prime minister to resign, while allies of Burnham are said to be compiling a list of nearly 200 lawmakers willing to publicly back his departure and support a structured leadership transition.

Starmer has previously dismissed speculation about his future, insisting he would resist any leadership challenge. In an earlier interview with the BBC, he said: “I was elected to serve my country with a mandate that we secured at a general election two years ago.”

However, sources close to the prime minister indicate that his position has become more flexible behind closed doors as internal opposition continues to grow.

If confirmed, Starmer’s resignation would bring an end to a premiership that began with a landslide election victory in July 2024 but was increasingly overshadowed by falling public support, policy setbacks and deepening divisions within the Labour Party.
