Lionel Messi is set to make his long-awaited return to India, marking his first visit in 14 years, with the launch of the GOAT Tour on Saturday. The three-day tour, beginning in Kolkata, is highlighted by the virtual unveiling of a colossal 21-metre statue of the Argentine football legend. This tour, spanning four cities from December 13 to 15, promises to blend Messi’s international star power with India’s growing passion for football, featuring fan engagements, exhibition matches, and high-profile meetings.
The tour kicks off in Kolkata, where a towering iron statue of Messi, crafted by sculptor Monti Paul, stands as the centerpiece at Sreebhumi Sporting Club in Lake Town. The 70-foot (21-metre) sculpture, depicting Messi hoisting the 2022 World Cup trophy, was completed in just 40 days. Due to security protocols, Messi will virtually unveil the statue from his hotel, but the event will still be a highlight for thousands of local fans. Paul, reflecting on the significance of his work, told AFP, “It’s a matter of pride to build the sculpture of Messi. It’s the tallest statue I have made.”
In addition to the statue, fans can experience a “Hola Messi” fan zone at the club, which includes a life-sized replica of Messi’s throne, as well as recreations of his Miami home complete with family mannequins.
The Kolkata leg of the tour will take place at Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) on December 13, beginning at 9:00 am local time (3:30 am GMT). The schedule includes a meet-and-greet with Messi, the statue inauguration, and a friendly match with local dignitaries such as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, former cricketer Sourav Ganguly, and Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan. Khan, co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders IPL franchise, confirmed his attendance on social media, stating, “This time round not planning my Knight in Kolkata…. and hoping the day Ride is completely ‘Messi’. See you guys on the 13th at the Salt Lake Stadium.”
Tickets for the event are available via the District app, starting at ₹4,366. Select events will also be streamed on Prasar Bharati’s YouTube and Waves OTT. Messi’s last visit to Kolkata in 2011, when he scored in Argentina’s 5-4 victory over Nigeria, ignited a lasting fanbase in the city.
Samir Nandy, a local supporter, described Messi’s return as “a dream come true.” He added, “Legends are not made by success alone. It is his resilience that made me believe in him. The statue is a fitting tribute.” Another fan, Subhankar, said, “Lionel Messi is like God to us… We’ve even installed a statue of him here. We’re so excited that we probably won’t be able to sleep.”
Messi’s triumphs are fresh in the minds of his fans, having recently led Inter Miami to their inaugural MLS Cup title on December 6, defeating Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-1. Messi’s two assists in the final earned him the MLS Cup MVP award. A few days later, on December 9, he made history by winning the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award for a second consecutive year, finishing the season with 29 goals and 19 assists—48 contributions in 28 matches.
Following the Kolkata events, Messi will travel to Hyderabad on December 13. At Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, he will participate in a 7v7 match with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and attend a concert in his honor. On December 14, Messi heads to Mumbai for the Padel GOAT Cup at Cricket Club of India, followed by a celebrity match at Wankhede Stadium, featuring stars like Tiger Shroff, John Abraham, and cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni.
The tour will culminate in New Delhi on December 15, where Messi is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss youth development and football’s growth in the country. Messi may also felicitate Minerva Academy’s youth team and join a 9v9 celebrity game with prominent figures such as Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill. Tickets for these events begin at ₹4,720.
This whirlwind tour will not only highlight Messi’s on-field brilliance but also his off-field impact, with various events showcasing his cultural influence. The schedule includes coaching clinics, fashion shows for charity, and unique cultural fusions like Argentine mate with Assam tea.
Messi himself expressed his excitement for the tour, saying, “India is a very special country, and I have good memories from my time there 14 years ago—the fans were fantastic. India is a passionate football nation, and I look forward to meeting a new generation of fans while sharing the love I have for this beautiful game.”
For a nation where cricket has traditionally reigned supreme, the growing popularity of football is evident, with the Indian Super League’s 2025 viewership rising by 25 percent. Messi’s tour arrives at a pivotal time for the sport in India, providing a cultural milestone for the footballing community.
In recognition of his fame, Messi’s movements during the tour will be surrounded by Z-category security, underscoring the immense fan following in a country of 1.4 billion people. As the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner prepares to defend his World Cup title in 2026, this tour further cements his legacy and inspires the next wave of Indian football talent.
