A soldier has been killed and several residents are feared abducted after heavily armed gunmen launched coordinated attacks on communities in Nigeria’s southwestern Ogun State, residents and local sources said.
The assailants reportedly stormed the affected communities in the early hours of the attack, opening fire indiscriminately and forcing terrified residents to flee for safety. The violence claimed the life of a soldier who was responding to the assault, while an unspecified number of residents were allegedly taken away by the attackers.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as the gunmen moved through the communities, with many families abandoning their homes amid sustained gunfire. The full extent of the casualties and kidnappings remains unclear as security agencies continue search-and-rescue operations.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement confirming the number of people abducted or the identity of those responsible for the attack. Security personnel have since been deployed to the affected areas as efforts continue to restore calm and track down the perpetrators.
The latest incident underscores the growing security concerns in parts of Nigeria, where communities continue to grapple with recurring attacks, kidnappings, and armed violence despite ongoing security operations.
