Mikel Arteta has reaffirmed his support for Gabriel Jesus to establish himself as Arsenal’s primary forward, just days after the Brazilian’s long-awaited return from an 11-month knee injury layoff. This endorsement comes as the Gunners sit atop the Premier League, navigating a crowded fixture schedule and managing a series of injury doubts ahead of Saturday’s home match against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Jesus made his comeback with a substitute appearance in Arsenal’s dominant 3-0 Champions League win over Club Brugge on Wednesday, entering in the 78th minute alongside Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli—evoking memories of the attacking trio that propelled the club’s 2022-23 title charge. The 28-year-old had been sidelined since January with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear suffered during an FA Cup tie against Manchester United. In his brief 12-minute cameo, he showed no signs of his previous injury, drawing emotional reactions from fans and a post-match prayer on the pitch.

In his first media appearance since the return, Jesus expressed his excitement: “I feel more than ready. If I came back early and strong, it’s because of first God, and then the people around me who helped me a lot.” He shared that while he had hoped to score in his first outing, rejoining his teammates and contributing to the team was his priority.

Arteta quickly endorsed Jesus as a vital part of the squad, saying at a pre-match press conference, “Yes, a player of his quality, a player that has given us so much, and he comes with the energy that he came with the other day. He’s certainly a player that has to be pushing and aiming for that, that’s for sure.” This sets up a competitive battle for the central forward role, with Jesus now contending with Viktor Gyökeres, the £55 million summer signing from Sporting Lisbon, and Kai Havertz, who is currently dealing with a knee issue.

Despite the attacking options available, Arteta dismissed any rumors of offloading Jesus in January. “Gabriel has a lot to offer to the team, and he’s proven that straight away in the first minute that he was available to play,” Arteta said, underlining Jesus’ contributions and the dedication he had shown in returning from injury. Jesus’ reintegration into the squad follows a club protocol for long-term injury recovery, including personalized rehabilitation and gradual reintegration, learned from past experiences where rushed returns had caused setbacks.

Since resuming training in November, Jesus has participated in behind-closed-doors friendlies and cameos in league matches against Chelsea and Brentford before making his European return. Arteta also expressed confidence in Gyökeres, who has struggled to find his scoring touch since mid-September but continues to impress with his off-the-ball work. “The goals will come, and we’re going to be very pleased with him,” Arteta said, referring to Gyökeres’ adaptation to the Premier League’s demands.

Looking ahead to Arsenal’s clash with Wolves, who are enduring a miserable season at the foot of the table, Arteta previewed a fast-paced and aggressive start. “We’ll go full gas from the beginning,” he said, hoping to extend Arsenal’s slim two-point lead at the top of the league. Arsenal’s squad depth, bolstered by the return of Jesus, could prove crucial as they face a busy schedule during the holiday period.

However, Arsenal’s backline remains a concern, with William Saliba still recovering from a knock and Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber both facing late fitness assessments. Arteta remains pragmatic about the situation: “Let’s see how it is today… We have to wait how far he can push.”

Despite the injury setbacks, Arsenal’s resilience has been evident in their impressive start to the season, both domestically and in Europe. With Jesus’ return injecting further dynamism into an already potent attack, Arteta’s faith in Gyökeres signals patience in developing a balanced squad that blends youth and experience.

As Arsenal prepare for their upcoming match against a Wolves side desperate for points, the Gunners will aim to solidify their title credentials, with the squad’s depth and resilience being key factors in the run-up to the holiday fixtures.
