Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has directed police commands across the country to seize vehicles operating without valid number plates as part of intensified efforts to address growing security concerns.
The directive forms part of a broader security crackdown aimed at denying criminal elements the anonymity often associated with unregistered vehicles, which security agencies say are frequently used in the commission of crimes.
According to the police chief, strict enforcement of vehicle registration laws is expected to enhance surveillance, improve intelligence gathering and strengthen efforts to curb criminal activities nationwide.
The order mandates officers to impound any vehicle found plying public roads without authorised number plates, while owners are expected to comply with existing registration regulations before their vehicles can be released.
The latest directive comes amid renewed efforts by security agencies to tighten internal security and improve public safety across Nigeria.
