Benin’s Interior Minister has announced that a coup attempt aimed at destabilising the country has been successfully thwarted by security forces.
In a brief statement issued on Monday, the minister confirmed that a group of suspects allegedly linked to the plot had been apprehended, while others remain under investigation. He described the attempted power grab as a “serious but contained threat” to national stability.
According to the minister, intelligence operatives had been monitoring suspicious activities for weeks before moving in to prevent what he called “a coordinated effort to undermine democratic governance.” He added that weapons and communication equipment believed to have been intended for the operation were recovered during raids at multiple locations.
Authorities have tightened security in key government installations as investigations continue. The minister reassured citizens that the situation is under full control and urged the public to remain calm, noting that Benin’s democratic institutions remain “solid and resilient.”
Further details on the identities of the suspects and the motive behind the planned coup are expected to be released as inquiries progress.
