West Africa’s fragile democratic landscape has suffered another major setback following the reported coup attempt in Benin Republic, analysts warn.

ccording to his assessment, the situation in Benin heightens regional instability and raises fresh concerns for neighbouring countries, including Nigeria, whose security and economic interests are closely tied to developments within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The development comes at a time when ECOWAS is under mounting pressure to respond decisively to recurring coups that have weakened its authority and shaken investor confidence across the sub-region.

Security observers fear that the Benin crisis could embolden anti-democratic actors and further challenge the collective resolve of West African governments and institutions, including the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) and national armies, to safeguard constitutional rule.

warns that unless firm diplomatic, political and security measures are taken, West Africa risks sliding into a prolonged period of instability that could undermine decades of democratic progress.

The situation continues to evolve, with regional bodies and security agencies closely monitoring developments.
