Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has taken a swipe at activist Aisha Yesufu, ridiculing her defeat in the FCT senatorial primary election under the National Democratic Coalition (NDC).
Speaking during a public engagement, Wike recalled Yesufu’s previous remarks in which she dismissed him as merely a government appointee, suggesting she had no interest in engaging with appointed officials.
“There is one woman, Aisha Yesufu, who said Wike is an appointee of government and that she has no business with appointees. People can speak grammar and make all sorts of claims on television, but when it comes to politics, the real test is performance,” Wike said.
The minister questioned Yesufu’s political relevance, pointing to her inability to secure victory in the party’s primary election despite her public commentary and political activism.
“It is easy for people to go on television and churn out figures and data from nowhere. But when the time came to prove their strength politically, what happened? It did not work,” he added.
Wike’s remarks are the latest in a series of exchanges between the former Rivers State governor and some prominent civil society voices, highlighting the growing tensions between political office holders and government critics ahead of future electoral contests.
