Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has declared that supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu do not need the backing of state governors to mobilise ahead of the 2027 general election, insisting that the president already commands a strong grassroots political structure.
Speaking during a meeting with political stakeholders in Abuja, Wike said Tinubu’s supporters possess enough political machinery to organise independently, citing the presence of senators, members of the National Assembly and state assemblies, local government chairmen, as well as party leaders across both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“We don’t need a governor to mobilise for President Tinubu,” Wike said. “We have what it takes to stand on our own. We have senators, assembly members, local government chairmen, National Assembly members and party chairmen of APC and PDP.”
The former Rivers State governor added that Tinubu’s allies had already begun coordinating efforts towards the 2027 campaign, including making financial commitments to support the president’s re-election bid.
“We have mobilised ourselves and made commitments to donate towards President Tinubu’s campaign in 2027,” he said.
Wike’s comments come amid growing political manoeuvring across Nigeria as key power blocs begin positioning ahead of the next presidential race. Although the election is still more than a year away, early alignments and declarations of loyalty have intensified within the ruling APC and among influential figures outside the party.
The FCT minister, a prominent political heavyweight, has remained a vocal supporter of Tinubu despite retaining strong ties with elements of the opposition, a stance that continues to reshape political calculations in several parts of the country.
Analysts say Wike’s remarks underline a broader strategy to project Tinubu’s political strength beyond state-level control, signalling confidence in federal lawmakers and grassroots structures to drive mobilisation ahead of 2027.
