Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has unveiled a new radio station in Rivers State amid growing political mobilisation for President Bola Tinubu’s expected 2027 re-election bid.
The station, Majority FM 89.5, is operating from the Renewed Hope Ambassadors’ office in Port Harcourt and is widely seen as part of an early campaign push to consolidate support for Tinubu in the South-South region.
Photographs circulating online on Friday showed broadcasting equipment installed inside the political office, with party supporters present at the location.
Although no official launch ceremony was announced, political observers say the move signals an intensification of grassroots messaging efforts by allies of the president, particularly in Rivers – a key oil-producing state and long-time political stronghold of Wike.
Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, has faced mounting economic pressure and public criticism over subsidy removal and currency reforms. Despite this, his supporters appear to be laying the groundwork early for a second-term campaign.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and influential powerbroker in the South-South, has remained a prominent figure within Tinubu’s political camp since the 2023 elections, despite internal divisions within his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Neither the Presidency nor the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commented on the development.
Nigeria’s next general election is scheduled for 2027.
