Nigeria’s main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has condemned a court order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), describing the move as a calculated attempt to weaken opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The PDP alleged that the legal action forms part of a broader strategy to undermine Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and restrict political competition. The party argued that any effort to eliminate opposition parties through the courts would erode public confidence in the electoral process and threaten democratic governance.
Calling on INEC to uphold its constitutional independence, the PDP urged the electoral body to resist political pressure and ensure that all registered political parties are treated fairly and in accordance with the law.
The party further warned that actions perceived as targeting opposition groups could heighten political tensions and damage the credibility of preparations for the 2027 elections.
