A United States airstrike in Iraq has killed a senior Shi’ite militia commander along with at least 14 others, in a move likely to escalate already fragile security tensions in the region.

According to local security sources, the strike targeted a convoy believed to be linked to Iran-aligned armed groups operating within Iraq. The attack reportedly took place late at night, hitting vehicles travelling in a strategic area known for militia activity.

Officials in United States have yet to release full details, but early reports suggest the operation was aimed at disrupting planned attacks against US personnel and allied forces stationed in Iraq.

The killing of the commander marks a significant blow to Shi’ite militia networks, many of which maintain close ties to Iran. Analysts warn the strike could provoke retaliatory actions, raising fears of renewed violence across Iraq and neighbouring regions.

Iraqi authorities have condemned the incident, describing it as a violation of sovereignty, while calls for restraint grow amid concerns that the situation could spiral into a broader confrontation.

The development comes at a time of heightened instability in the Middle East, where tensions between US forces and Iran-backed groups have continued to simmer.
