The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 44,000 litres of illegally refined petroleum products and arrested eight suspects during a targeted anti-oil theft operation in Rivers State, officials said.

The operation, carried out in the oil-rich Niger Delta region, forms part of ongoing efforts to curb crude oil theft and illegal refining, a persistent challenge that continues to impact Nigeria’s economy and environment.

Naval authorities disclosed that the suspects were apprehended at various illegal refining sites, where large quantities of stolen fuel were discovered and seized. The confiscated products are believed to have been siphoned from pipelines and processed in makeshift facilities.

Officials say the crackdown underscores a renewed commitment by security agencies to dismantle oil theft networks and safeguard national assets. The suspects are expected to face prosecution in line with existing laws.

Oil theft remains a major concern in Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, with authorities intensifying operations to stem losses and restore production levels.
