President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed the release of 24 abducted schoolgirls from Kebbi State, praising the efforts that led to their safe return while directing security agencies to intensify operations to free those still in captivity.

The schoolgirls, kidnapped earlier this month by armed men in Kebbi, were received by the president in Abuja on Monday. Tinubu expressed relief at their return but stressed that the mission remains incomplete until every abducted child is safely home.

“I am relieved that all the 24 girls have been accounted for,” he said. “Now, we must put as a matter of urgency more boots on the ground in the vulnerable areas to avert further incidents of kidnapping. My government will offer all the assistance needed to achieve this.”

The president’s remarks come amid rising concerns over renewed kidnapping waves in northern Nigeria, where armed groups have increasingly targeted schools, drawing national and international condemnation.

Tinubu assured the families of victims still in captivity that the government is “fully committed” to securing their release. He also directed security agencies to tighten surveillance, improve intelligence gathering and expand coordinated operations in high-risk communities.

Local authorities in Kebbi State have urged continued federal support, warning that communities remain vulnerable unless sustained security measures are implemented.

The rescue of the 24 girls marks a significant breakthrough, but analysts say Nigeria faces an uphill battle in curbing mass abductions, which have become a hallmark of armed groups operating across the region.
