Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has renewed his call for President Bola Tinubu to resign, accusing the administration of incompetence, lack of compassion and failing to deliver on campaign promises.

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, Obi cited an International Monetary Fund (IMF) consultation report that he says revealed ₦8.83 trillion in 2025 expenditure that was not reflected in the national budget. He said the spending was therefore outside legislative oversight and administrative scrutiny.

Obi highlighted the scale of the amount, saying it represented about 2 per cent of Nigeria’s gross domestic product, more than 35 per cent of the 2025 capital budget of ₦23.96 trillion, and exceeded the combined 2025 allocations for education (₦3.52 trillion) and health (₦2.38 trillion).

“If such an amount is properly used and accounted for, it could transform Nigeria’s public health and education sectors, create cottage industries, provide jobs for thousands of graduates and build a solid foundation for economic development. But we cannot account for it,” Obi said, accusing the Tinubu government of a “pattern of grand corruption” and a “total disregard of elementary rules of public finance management.”

He warned that the alleged capture and plunder of public resources undermines national security and state stability, deepening poverty and increasing the risk of state failure. Obi reiterated his earlier call for Tinubu to resign, saying the daily revelations of pervasive corruption and the administration’s perceived lack of commitment to citizens’ welfare and security make resignation the only reasonable course of action.

“The collapse of elementary forms of due process under Tinubu and the increased evidence of rampant looting of Nigerian public finances reinforce the need for greater accountability,” he said, urging citizens to “rise within the law and hold this administration to account.”
