United States President Donald Trump and his administration will closely and personally monitor Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 general elections, U.S. Congressman Riley Moore has revealed.

Speaking in a recent interview, Moore—a member of the U.S. House of Representatives—disclosed that both he and President Trump are paying “very close attention” to Nigeria’s democratic process, amid growing concerns over governance and electoral integrity.

“We’re certainly going to be watching these results, how these elections unfold, and how they’re executed,” Moore said. “That’s something that myself and the administration are going to be paying very close attention to.”

Moore, who confirmed he is in direct communication with the U.S. President on the matter, added: “I continue to talk to [Trump] about these issues, and it’s very important to him.”

Security Aid Tied to Human Rights

Beyond election monitoring, the lawmaker revealed that the U.S. Congress is moving to pass a major foreign policy bill that could redefine Washington’s relationship with Abuja.

Moore stated that he has inserted strict, binding provisions into the U.S. foreign operations appropriations bill. These provisions tie future U.S. security assistance to Nigeria to measurable progress in protecting human rights and ending the persecution of Christians.

“There’s a lot of language that I put in that bill that relates to Nigeria, the persecution of Christians, and restrictions on security assistance to the Government of Nigeria and steps that they have to take,” Moore explained.

He expressed confidence that the legislation, which he described as “strong and aggressive,” will soon be passed into law.

The warning from Washington comes at a critical time for Nigeria. Ahead of the 2027 polls, opposition parties are already regrouping to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while civil society organizations continue to express deep concern over the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the overall transparency of the vote.
