Nigerian troops have successfully repelled a coordinated overnight attack by suspected armed fighters on a forward operating military base in Moriki, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, in the latest wave of insecurity to hit Nigeria’s northwestern region.

According to security sources, the attack began at about 1:00 a.m. on Friday, when heavily armed assailants launched a simultaneous assault on the military position from multiple directions in what appeared to be a well-coordinated operation.

The troops engaged the attackers in an intense gun battle, eventually forcing them to retreat after fierce resistance. While the military base was successfully defended, civilians in the surrounding community were reportedly injured during the exchange of gunfire. The exact number of casualties and the circumstances surrounding the civilian injuries were not immediately disclosed.

The incident highlights the persistent security challenges facing communities in Zamfara State, where armed groups have continued to carry out attacks on villages, highways and security installations despite ongoing military operations aimed at restoring stability.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement detailing the extent of the damage or confirming whether any military personnel or attackers were killed or wounded during the confrontation.

The report was first disclosed by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication that closely monitors security developments across Nigeria’s conflict-affected regions, citing security sources familiar with the incident.

The latest assault underscores the continuing threat posed by armed groups operating across Nigeria’s northwest, where security forces remain engaged in sustained operations to contain violence and protect vulnerable communities.
