Energy giant Shell continued operating a major oil pipeline in Nigeria for years despite evidence of persistent pollution and environmental risks, according to documents reviewed in a new investigative report.

The documents reportedly reveal that the company was aware of concerns surrounding contamination linked to the pipeline but failed to halt operations, raising fresh questions about corporate accountability and environmental stewardship in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

Environmental advocates say the findings reinforce longstanding allegations that oil companies have neglected the ecological and health consequences of repeated spills, leaving local communities to bear the burden of polluted waterways, damaged farmlands and lost livelihoods.

Shell has faced sustained criticism over its environmental record in Nigeria, where decades of oil exploration have been accompanied by recurring disputes over pollution, compensation and remediation efforts.

The revelations are expected to intensify calls for greater transparency, stronger regulatory oversight and justice for affected communities across the Niger Delta.
