President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on a number of pro-democracy figures, journalists and public personalities, saying their sacrifices and persecution under past military rule helped pave the way for Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Among those honoured were Ralph Obiora, Joe Okei-Odumakin, Joe Igbokwe, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (Rtd), Colonel Musa Shehu (Rtd), Muyiwa Adekeye, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, Osa Director, George Mbah and several others.
Speaking during the ceremony, Tinubu said the recipients had endured persecution and made significant personal sacrifices in the struggle for democratic governance.
“They suffered persecution so that we have democracy today,” the president said, describing the awardees as individuals whose resilience and commitment helped shape Nigeria’s democratic future.
The honours recognise the contributions of activists, media professionals and public figures whose roles in the pro-democracy movement, according to the presidency, strengthened the country’s return to civilian rule and the preservation of democratic values.
