The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has appointed former Governor Samuel Ortom as its representative on the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT). The announcement was made in a statement released on Tuesday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Tim Nyor.
The statement noted that Ortom’s appointment is in accordance with sections 32(1)(g) and 32(4) of the PDP constitution, which outline the selection process for BoT members. The notification of Ortom’s nomination was signed by the party’s Secretary, Comrade Dan Nyikwagh, and endorsed by the State Working Committee (SWC).
Chaired by Rt. Hon. Ezekiel Awulu Adaji, the SWC expressed unanimous support for Ortom’s nomination, highlighting his extensive experience, dedication to the party, and exemplary leadership qualities.
“After careful deliberation, the SWC under the Chairmanship of Rt. Hon. Ezekiel Awulu Adaji unanimously endorsed you for the position, recognizing your invaluable contributions to the party, your exemplary leadership, and your commitment to the ideals and progress of the PDP,” the statement read.
Ortom, who served as the Governor of Benue State from 2015 to 2023, is recognized as an influential figure within the PDP, known for his governance and advocacy on various social issues. His new role is expected to strengthen the party’s influence and strategic direction, especially as it gears up for the upcoming elections.
It is noteworthy that Ortom publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid during a gathering on January 13, 2024. He stated that the G5 group within the PDP would support Tinubu’s candidacy for a second term in 2027.
Addressing a crowd of allies of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, Ortom expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, stating, “If we work to ensure Bola Ahmed succeeds, there will be tomorrow for anybody to even contest the election at all.” He emphasized that the G5 group has no regrets about supporting Tinubu in the last election and reaffirmed their commitment to backing him in the future.
Ortom concluded by assuring Nigerians that Tinubu would address critical challenges such as security and the economy, stating, “We have nowhere to go because that is what Nigerians believe.”
