Former First Lady of Ondo State, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has publicly declared her support for former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, saying she stands with him ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
In a statement shared publicly, Anyanwu-Akeredolu described her backing as rooted in Obi’s promise to serve a single term if elected, a position she said aligns with her vision of purposeful and accountable leadership.
“One-term promise: I stand with Peter Obi come 2027,” she said, signalling her endorsement of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
Peter Obi, who emerged as a leading opposition figure in the last general election, continues to attract support from political stakeholders and civil society figures disillusioned with Nigeria’s traditional political establishment.
Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the widow of former Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has increasingly spoken out on national issues since her husband’s death, earning attention for her forthright views on governance, equity and political reform.
Her endorsement adds to ongoing discussions around possible realignments ahead of 2027, as opposition figures explore strategies to challenge the ruling party and present a unified alternative to voters.
Neither Obi nor the Labour Party has formally responded to her statement, but analysts say such declarations underscore Obi’s continued relevance in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
