Nigeria has unveiled an ambitious reform of its power sector aimed at significantly expanding electricity generation, reducing the country’s heavy reliance on petrol and diesel generators, and accelerating the transition to cleaner, more reliable energy.
The sweeping initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle chronic electricity shortages that have long hindered economic growth and placed a financial burden on households and businesses. Officials say the reforms will prioritise increased power generation, improved transmission infrastructure, expanded access to electricity, and greater investment in renewable energy.
The government also pledged to create an enabling environment for private sector participation while strengthening the national grid to deliver a more stable and sustainable electricity supply.
If successfully implemented, the reforms could mark a turning point for Africa’s largest economy, where millions of people continue to depend on costly and polluting generators because of persistent power outages.
