Government officials in Nigeria’s Katsina State were seen negotiating directly with armed kidnappers on Friday, raising questions about the legality and ethics of such engagements. The negotiations led to the release of 37 residents abducted from Bakori Local Government Area earlier this week.

Eyewitnesses and images obtained by Sahara Reporters show Hon. AbdulRahman Ahmad Kandarawa, the member representing Bakori Constituency in the Katsina State House of Assembly, alongside the Bakori Local Government chairman, meeting armed men during the handover. Several of the freed victims were visibly exhausted, sitting on the ground as officials stood beside the gunmen.

The release followed days of behind-the-scenes talks brokered by local peace intermediary Isya Kwashen Garwa. The discussions are reported to have aimed at preventing further attacks in Bakori and neighbouring communities, which have suffered repeated raids, killings, and abductions.

Neither the state government nor national security agencies have commented on the circumstances of the negotiations, leaving the public questioning the implications of government officials negotiating directly with terrorist groups.

Analysts warn that such actions, while potentially saving lives in the short term, could set a controversial precedent and embolden criminal networks in the region.
