A devastating fire swept through parts of the Fika Main Market in Fika Local Government Area, destroying goods worth millions of naira and disrupting commercial activities in the early hours of Monday.
The blaze, which reportedly began before dawn, engulfed several shops and stalls, reducing merchandise to ashes before it was brought under control. Traders arrived at the scene to find their businesses in ruins, with many left in shock as they assessed the extent of their losses.
Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly due to the highly flammable nature of goods stored in the market, including food items, clothing materials and household supplies. The exact cause of the incident was not immediately clear, although some traders speculated that an electrical fault may have triggered the outbreak.
Local authorities and emergency responders were said to have intervened to prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the market. However, by the time the flames were contained, significant damage had already been recorded.
The Fika Main Market serves as a major commercial hub in Yobe State, supporting livelihoods for hundreds of traders and providing essential goods to residents in surrounding communities. Monday’s incident has raised fresh concerns over fire safety measures and emergency preparedness in public markets across the state.
As of press time, officials were yet to release an official estimate of the financial losses incurred. Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.
Affected traders have appealed to the state government and relevant agencies for urgent assistance to help them recover and rebuild their businesses.
