The first batch of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa has arrived in Lagos, marking the start of a government-backed operation to bring home citizens caught up in a fresh wave of xenophobic violence.
More than 1,000 Nigerians have registered for evacuation after attacks targeting foreign nationals spread across parts of South Africa, leaving many fearing for their safety. Nigerian-owned shops and businesses were among those reportedly looted and vandalised during the unrest.
President Bola Tinubu approved five special evacuation flights to be operated by Air Peace to facilitate the safe return of affected Nigerians. Four additional flights are expected to arrive in the coming days as authorities continue the repatriation exercise.
The evacuation follows renewed anti-foreigner protests in South Africa, where migrants from several African countries have faced intimidation and violence. The Nigerian government says it is working to ensure the safe return of all citizens who have requested assistance while monitoring developments closely.
