Nigeria’s National Economic Council (NEC) has approved N83.21 billion for the implementation of an Anticipatory Action Task Force aimed at reducing the devastating impact of floods and other climate-related disasters across the country.
The approval was granted during the council’s meeting on Thursday as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s disaster preparedness and climate resilience amid growing concerns over extreme weather events.
The fund will support proactive measures designed to protect vulnerable communities before disasters strike, shifting the country’s response from emergency relief to early intervention. The initiative is expected to improve coordination among relevant agencies, minimise the loss of lives and property, and bolster national preparedness against recurring floods and other climate-induced emergencies.
The decision comes as Nigeria continues to face increasingly severe flooding, which has displaced thousands of people, destroyed farmlands and infrastructure, and heightened concerns over the country’s vulnerability to the effects of climate change.
