Bill Gates has cancelled his scheduled keynote address at a high-profile summit in India, as renewed scrutiny over his past association with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein intensifies.

Organisers confirmed on Wednesday that the Microsoft co-founder would no longer participate in the annual leadership forum, citing “unavoidable circumstances.” The announcement came amid growing public and media attention surrounding Gates’ previous meetings with Epstein, who died in a US jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

Mounting pressure

The decision follows renewed debate in the United States over high-profile figures who had contact with Epstein. While Gates has previously acknowledged that meeting Epstein was a “mistake,” he has repeatedly denied any involvement in or knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities.

In past interviews, Gates said he met Epstein several times beginning in 2011 to discuss philanthropic initiatives. He later described the meetings as an error in judgment, saying they did not result in any charitable partnerships.

The controversy has resurfaced in recent weeks after court documents and media investigations revisited Epstein’s network of prominent acquaintances, prompting fresh questions about accountability and transparency among global elites.

Summit impact

The summit in New Delhi was expected to draw political leaders, business executives and civil society representatives from across Asia and beyond. Gates had been scheduled to speak about global health, climate innovation and digital development — areas central to the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Event organisers did not indicate whether Gates’ withdrawal would significantly alter the programme. A replacement speaker has not yet been announced.

Ongoing scrutiny

Gates remains a leading global philanthropist, particularly in health and vaccine initiatives. However, his past association with Epstein has periodically cast a shadow over his public engagements.

Analysts say the episode underscores the reputational risks faced by public figures linked, even indirectly, to criminal scandals.
