The Nigerian mission in Johannesburg says two Nigerian nationals have been killed in separate incidents in South Africa, as concerns grow over a resurgence of xenophobic tensions in parts of the country.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg identified the victims as Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew.
Consul-General Ninikanwa Okey-Uche said Emmanuel died from injuries he allegedly sustained after being assaulted by personnel of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) on April 20.
Details surrounding the second death, that of Ekpenyong Andrew, were not immediately disclosed.
The incidents come amid heightened sensitivities in South Africa over xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals, particularly in urban centres including Johannesburg.
Authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the cases as investigations are expected to continue.
