Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has said Nigeria may have struggled to win its civil war without logistical and material support from neighbouring Niger.

Speaking during an appearance on Soni Irabor Live, a programme on News Central, Obasanjo reflected on the country’s 1967–1970 conflict, widely known as the Nigerian Civil War.

He said that during the war, Nigeria relied on supplies that were channelled through Niger Republic, which played a key role in sustaining the Nigerian military’s operations on the battlefield.

“Without Niger Republic, it would have been difficult for Nigeria to win the civil war,” the former leader said, underscoring what he described as the importance of regional cooperation during the conflict.

The Nigerian Civil War, fought between the federal government and the secessionist state of Biafra, remains one of the most defining and devastating episodes in the country’s modern history.

Obasanjo’s remarks add to long-running discussions about the regional dynamics that shaped the outcome of the war and the external support networks that influenced its course.
