US President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with Iran, claiming he knows the whereabouts of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and suggesting that revealing such information would be “a bit stupid”.

Speaking during a media appearance, Trump said he could disclose Khamenei’s location “live on air”, but stopped short of doing so, adding that if he were in the Iranian leader’s position, he would be afraid to sleep in the same place for too long.

The remarks come amid heightened hostility between United States and Iran, with Washington maintaining economic sanctions while Tehran continues to face mounting domestic pressure over inflation, currency depreciation and unemployment.

National stakes for Iran

Trump’s comments have sparked renewed debate inside Iran about national security and sovereignty, as officials in Tehran seek to reassure citizens that the country’s leadership remains protected despite external threats.

Analysts say the statement is likely to be viewed by Iranian authorities as psychological warfare — aimed not only at the political elite but also at the wider population already grappling with rising living costs and restricted access to international markets due to sanctions.

For many Iranians, the rhetoric underscores how global power struggles directly affect daily life, from food prices to fuel subsidies, reinforcing public frustration over prolonged economic isolation.

Regional and global implications

The former US president’s remarks also risk inflaming tensions across the Middle East, where Iran plays a central role in regional conflicts and diplomacy. Security experts warn that such language could provoke retaliatory statements or actions, further destabilising an already volatile region.

Iranian officials have yet to issue a formal response, but state-aligned media outlets described the comments as reckless and provocative.

Diplomats fear that the exchange highlights the fragile nature of US-Iran relations, with ordinary citizens on both sides increasingly caught in the fallout of political brinkmanship.
