The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismissed recent reports alleging an assassination attempt against Nigerian Navy officer Lt. Ahmed Yerima in Abuja, labeling the claims as baseless and unverified.
Contrary to circulating social media posts and news reports that detailed a high-speed pursuit involving unmarked vehicles near Kubwa Expressway, the FCT Police confirmed no such incident was recorded or reported within the territory. The police urged the public to disregard the false information and refrain from spreading unconfirmed rumors that could cause panic.
The viral allegations appeared amidst tensions following a November 11 confrontation between Lt. Yerima and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. The dispute centered on a contested land plot in Gaduwa District, believed to be owned by retired Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo. Video footage showed Yerima blocking Wike’s team from accessing the site during a security operation. Wike accused the retired naval officer of illegal development activities and criticized Yerima for allegedly assaulting officials of the Federal Capital Development Authority. The exchange escalated into a public dispute, with military veterans supporting Yerima and calling for an apology from the minister.
Further clarifying the situation, Defence Minister Mohammed Abubakar assured that no lawful military personnel would be sanctioned over the incident, emphasizing protection for officers conducting lawful duties during a briefing for the upcoming 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The FCT Police Command continues to encourage vigilance among residents and requests that any suspicious activities be promptly reported to authorities to maintain peace and security in the capital.
