Nigeria is among more than 60 countries participating in the first global conference focused on transitioning away from fossil fuels, as world leaders and policymakers convene in Santa Marta, Colombia.
The five-day summit, co-hosted by Colombia and Netherlands, opened on Friday and is scheduled to run until April 29. It marks a significant step in global efforts to accelerate the transition toward cleaner energy sources amid growing concerns over climate change.
Delegates at the conference are expected to discuss strategies for reducing dependence on fossil fuels, scaling up renewable energy adoption, and addressing the economic implications of the energy transition—particularly for developing nations.
Nigeria’s participation underscores its role in ongoing international climate discussions, as the country balances its position as a major oil producer with increasing calls to diversify its energy mix and cut emissions.
The summit is seen as a pivotal moment in shaping global commitments toward a post-fossil fuel future, with outcomes likely to influence policy directions in both developed and emerging economies.
