Nigeria has formally acknowledged continued security cooperation with the United States following a series of American precision airstrikes on terrorist positions in the country’s North-West region.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that both nations remain actively engaged in “structured security cooperation and intelligence collaboration” aimed at countering terrorism and violent extremism.
According to the Ministry, this partnership—conducted under established international frameworks—has contributed to recent targeted strikes against armed groups destabilising communities in the region.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria confirms that Nigerian authorities remain engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America, in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism. This has led to precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West,” the statement read.
It further noted that the collaboration includes intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and other support channels conducted strictly within international law and with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The Ministry stressed that all counter-terrorism efforts are anchored on the protection of civilian lives and the safeguarding of Nigeria’s unity and diversity.
“Terrorist violence in any form—whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities—remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security,” it added.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to degrading terrorist networks, disrupting their financing and logistics, and preventing cross-border threats, while also strengthening the capacity of Nigeria’s security and intelligence institutions.
The Ministry assured that it will maintain communication with relevant international partners and continue to keep citizens informed through official channels.
