Nigeria has secured a $62.8m loan from Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development to upgrade climate-resilient school infrastructure and expand access to education for vulnerable children nationwide, government officials have announced.

The funding agreement, signed between Nigeria and the Kuwait-based development lender, is aimed at strengthening learning environments in flood- and heat-prone communities while improving enrolment and retention rates among disadvantaged pupils.

Authorities said the project will focus on rehabilitating classrooms, providing essential learning facilities and supporting inclusive education programmes, particularly in underserved rural and peri-urban areas.

Education officials described the initiative as part of broader efforts to build resilience against climate shocks while tackling Nigeria’s out-of-school crisis, which remains one of the largest globally. The programme is also expected to enhance teacher capacity and improve access to basic services such as water and sanitation in participating schools.

The loan forms part of Nigeria’s wider strategy to mobilise international development financing to strengthen public infrastructure and safeguard children’s education amid growing climate pressures.

Analysts say the investment could play a critical role in improving learning outcomes and protecting vulnerable communities, as Nigeria continues to confront the dual challenges of climate change and widening educational inequality.
