Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump and the international community to closely monitor Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State amid concerns over possible violence and intimidation.
Davido made the appeal in a post on X on Tuesday, urging the US and international community to draw attention to the election and encourage Nigerian authorities to protect voters and ensure their votes are respected.
“Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear,” the singer said.
He expressed concern over what he described as growing tensions and the possibility of violence, intimidation or disruption of the electoral process.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” he said.
Davido also called on relevant authorities to ensure that voters are protected and that the electoral process is conducted peacefully and transparently.
The singer’s appeal comes ahead of the 15 August governorship election, which has generated heightened political activity across the state.
Incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido’s uncle, is seeking re-election in a contest involving candidates including the All Progressives Congress’ Bola Oyebamiji and the African Democratic Congress’ Najeem Salaam.
Davido has openly backed his uncle’s re-election bid and has previously urged political actors and residents to reject violence, intimidation and provocation during the electoral process.
His latest intervention adds to calls for a peaceful and credible election, with the singer stressing that the priority should be to prevent bloodshed and allow Osun residents to freely exercise their democratic rights.
