NDC candidate demands apology over alleged ‘Kill Accord Members’ remarks ahead of Saturday’s Osun poll.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has strongly condemned inflammatory comments attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi ahead of Saturday’s Osun State election. Obi warned that such rhetoric is a “disgrace to democracy” and could incite electoral violence.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi expressed “deep regret and profound concern” over the Senator’s alleged remarks, which reportedly targeted members of the Accord Party. He reminded Fadahunsi that as a ranking member of the National Assembly, he holds a constitutional and moral duty to promote peace.
“As a high-ranking lawmaker representing the people, Senator Fadahunsi carries a solemn responsibility to uphold democratic norms and foster unity,” Obi stated. “It is therefore alarming and unacceptable that a distinguished senator would deploy intimidation or incendiary remarks capable of instilling fear in voters and potentially inciting violence in Osun State.”
Obi emphasized that elections should remain a peaceful exercise of civic duty, free from harassment. He argued that threats of force not only undermine the integrity of the process but also “disrespect the electorate and threaten the fragile peace of the state.”
The NDC candidate formally demanded a retraction of the comments. “I respectfully demand that Senator Fadahunsi retract these harmful statements and tender an apology to the peaceful people of Osun State,” he said.
Obi further urged political leaders and party loyalists across the spectrum to exercise restraint and prioritize democratic decorum. He also called on security agencies to closely monitor inflammatory utterances and ensure equal protection for citizens, election officials, and voters throughout the polling period.
“The democratic mandate belongs to the people,” Obi added. “No individual, regardless of status, should attempt to subvert the will of the people through fear or coercion.”
Addressing the residents of Osun directly, Obi urged them to remain calm and resolute as they head to the polls. He concluded by reiterating his stance that credible elections are a “necessary step towards a New Nigeria.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Osun State election for this Saturday. Security agencies have yet to issue an official response to the NDC candidate’s call for increased surveillance of political rhetoric.
