Hon. Umar Eniji, a leading House of Representatives aspirant for the Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency, has formally rejected the reported outcome of the party’s primary election, describing it as a breach of constitutional guidelines.
In a public notice released on Wednesday, Eniji clarified that no final resolution, conclusive primary election, or consensus agreement was reached during the official proceedings held at the NUT Event Centre in Lokoja on May 29, 2026.
According to the statement, the official meeting concluded without a winner being declared. However, Eniji alleged that after most recognized stakeholders and officials had departed the venue, a group of individuals moved to an undisclosed location to announce a “winner” in an unauthorized manner.
“It is important to state that of the two recognized methods for conducting party primaries, neither was duly observed during the exercise in question,” the statement read. “Consequently, the purported declaration of winners remains questionable and lacks the legitimacy required under established party procedures.”
Rather than engaging in a public confrontation, Hon. Eniji confirmed that he has taken the diplomatic and legal route by formally petitioning the appropriate organs of the party. He noted that the party leadership is currently reviewing the grievances and is expected to act in accordance with the party’s constitution to ensure a fair and transparent process.
While the internal review is underway, Eniji urged his supporters and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding.
“We remain confident in the party’s internal mechanisms for resolving disputes and ensuring justice. We urge our members to stay resolute as we pursue the legitimate path to representation,” he added.
The petition comes amid growing calls for transparency in the Dekina/Bassa constituency race, as party faithful look to the leadership to resolve the brewing impasse.
