MultiChoice, the African broadcasting giant behind DStv and GOtv, has announced plans to shut down its streaming platform Showmax after more than a decade in operation, marking a significant shift in the company’s digital strategy amid fierce global competition in the streaming market.
The company said the decision followed a comprehensive internal review aimed at strengthening its long-term digital strategy and ensuring the sustainability of its streaming operations as international platforms continue to dominate the sector.
Launched in 2015 in South Africa, Showmax quickly expanded across multiple African markets, positioning itself as one of the continent’s leading home-grown streaming services. The platform offered a mix of local African productions, international series, movies and sports content, attracting millions of subscribers across the region.
Despite its growth, MultiChoice said the evolving streaming landscape required a strategic reset to remain competitive and financially viable.
In a statement, the company assured subscribers that services will continue uninterrupted for the time being, stressing that users do not need to take any immediate action. It added that further details on the shutdown timeline and transition arrangements will be communicated well in advance.
“Customer experience remains our top priority,” the company said, noting that it is working to ensure a smooth transition for viewers when the final closure schedule is announced.
The move also comes shortly after French media conglomerate Canal+ secured regulatory approval to acquire MultiChoice, a development expected to reshape Africa’s pay-TV and streaming landscape.
However, the company did not disclose how the shutdown might affect employees associated with Showmax, nor did it specify whether alternative streaming options will be offered to existing users.
Industry analysts say the decision highlights the growing pressure regional streaming platforms face from global competitors such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video, which continue to expand aggressively into emerging markets.
For now, Showmax subscribers across Africa will continue to access the platform as usual while awaiting further updates from MultiChoice on the service’s eventual closure.
