Prof. Oladapo Ashiru urges Nigerians to maintain physical distance and observe strict hygiene measures to reduce the risk of Ebola infection.

A Nigerian medical expert, Prof. Oladapo Ashiru, has urged Nigerians to avoid handshakes and hugs as part of precautionary measures against Ebola, stressing that the virus is not airborne.

Ashiru, president of the Foundation, Academy of Medical Sciences, said Ebola spreads primarily through direct contact with the body fluids or secretions of an infected person who is showing symptoms.

He explained that, unlike COVID-19, Ebola does not spread through the air in the same way, highlighting the importance of understanding how the virus is transmitted to prevent infection.

The medical expert advised Nigerians to maintain physical distance, avoid unnecessary physical contact and observe appropriate hygiene and safety measures.

Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease that can spread through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person, as well as contaminated materials.

Health authorities generally recommend avoiding contact with suspected cases, practising good hand hygiene and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms develop following possible exposure.

Ashiru’s advice comes as a reminder that public awareness and adherence to preventive measures are essential in limiting the spread of infectious diseases.

He urged Nigerians to remain cautious and prioritise personal and public health by following recommended safety precautions.
