Nigeria’s parliament says it is drafting a decentralised policing framework designed to curb political abuse and strengthen accountability.

The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, said the National Assembly has begun work on a state police model aimed at reshaping the country’s security architecture.

Bamidele said the proposed framework would introduce robust safeguards to prevent misuse of policing powers by political actors, a long-standing concern in debates over state-controlled security forces.

The move comes amid growing calls for a decentralised approach to policing as authorities seek solutions to persistent security challenges across the country.
