A political earthquake is shaking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State, as rumours swirl that Governor Nasiru Idris is eyeing a defection to join forces with PDP’s Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 elections. The governor’s prolonged silence, now stretching past 48 hours, has ignited a firestorm of speculation, leaving party members and residents in a state of anxious uncertainty.
The bombshell report, which went viral online, alleges Idris is among five APC governors considering a strategic alliance with Atiku to challenge President Tinubu’s hold on power. This claim has sent shockwaves through the state, where the opposition PDP, bolstered by its control of all three senatorial seats, already boasts a formidable presence.
Former Governor Adamu Aliero’s significant political clout, despite his PDP switch, further amplifies the tension. With Idris’s narrow 2023 victory over PDP’s Aminu Bande still fresh in memory, the prospect of a defection has triggered an internal crisis within the APC.
Whispers of top APC members engaging with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in anticipation of Idris’s potential exit have intensified the chaos. In the governor’s own ward, Nassarawa II, confusion reigns.
APC State Chairman, Muhammad Zuru, has issued a desperate plea for loyalty, warning members against “so-called emerging political parties.” However, this has done little to quell the growing unrest.
While some APC stalwarts dismiss the rumours as baseless, others fear the governor’s departure could shatter the party’s dominance in Kebbi. “The silence from the government is worrisome,” one anonymous party member lamented. “If the governor defects, it could spell the end.”
Adding to the intrigue, whispers of Attorney General Abubakar Malami stepping into the governor’s shoes in 2027 have surfaced, with some APC members touting him as a unifying force.
The APC’s historical stronghold in Kebbi is now visibly fractured, exposing deep cracks within its ranks. Meanwhile, efforts to reach Governor Idris’s Special Adviser, Kabir Sani-Giant, who was recently suspended after allegedly bringing a snake into the Government House, have proved futile.
The political drama in Kebbi continues to unfold, leaving the state on tenterhooks as the 2027 elections loom.
