The political landscape of Adamawa State is set for a major realignment as former Governor, Senator Muhammadu Umaru Jibrilla Bindow, prepares to dump the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This development became imminent following a high-profile, closed-door meeting between Senator Bindow and Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on [Insert Day of the Week].
Sources close to the former governor revealed that the meeting was highly strategic, focusing on the modalities of Bindow’s return to the APC, a party he once led in Adamawa State during his tenure as governor between 2015 and 2019.
The ADC Fallout
Bindow’s decision to exit the ADC comes on the heels of a major political upset within the party. Despite being in a pole position to clinch the Adamawa ADC governorship ticket, the former governor surprisingly lost the ticket to Omar Sulaiman.
Sulaiman is a cousin to the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal.
The primary election outcome reportedly sent shockwaves through Bindow’s political camp, leading to consultations on his next political move. Interestingly, Babachir Lawal himself recently resigned from the ADC, further fueling speculations of an impending collapse of the party’s structure in the state.
A Homecoming for Bindow?
Political analysts view Bindow’s imminent return to the APC as a significant boost for the ruling party in Adamawa State, which is currently governed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
“Bindow still commands a massive grassroots following in Adamawa,” a source within the APC National Working Committee told our correspondent. “His return to the APC, facilitated at the highest level of presidency by the Vice President, is a clear signal that the APC is consolidating its strength ahead of future elections in the state.”
As of the time of filing this report, official statements from the presidency and Senator Bindow’s media team are still being expected. However, insiders confirm that a formal defection ceremony is being planned in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, in the coming days.
