The All Progressives Congress in Kano is tearing itself apart. Supporters of Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and those loyal to ex-governor Abdullahi Ganduje squared off again this week, this time over who runs the party in Kano Municipal.

Trouble started after a group of stakeholders kicked out Mutari Ishaq, the Ganduje-backed chairman of the local-government chapter. On Sunday, ward reps and other members met, said they spoke with one voice, and voted to expel him.

The gathering was meant to patch things up between the two camps. Instead, each side stalked off to its own venue, trading accusations and hardening the split.

Ganduje’s crowd met at the party office with local chairman Sani Abubakar Mai Fata Sharada, Ishaq, Baffa Babba Dan’agundi, Sagir Koki, Salim Hashim Gwangwazo, Nura Hussain, Nabil Sarki Daneji, Ibrahim Kankarofi and Kabiru Labour.

Across town, Barau’s allies—Salisu Maje Ahmed Gwangwazo, Ibrahim Kankarofi, Fa’izu Alfindiki, Dan Bello, Hamza Darma and Faruk Iya Sambo—held a parallel session at Sultanate Suite.

Meanwhile, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s backers slipped into the Ganduje meeting, adding another layer of intrigue to the talks.

Control of Kano Municipal matters: the council has one of the biggest voter rolls in the state, and every faction wants the numbers on its side before the next election cycle.
