The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) convened an emergency closed-door meeting in Lagos on Thursday, drawing together its top executives from across the country.
The high-level session, held between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., was attended by key figures including the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and party founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam; National Chairman, Dr Agbo Major; and Secretary-General, Dr Oginni Olaposi.
Briefing journalists afterwards at the NAGAFF Headquarters in Apapa, Dr Aniebonam revealed that the discussions centred on urgent matters affecting the party’s operations nationwide.
“At the top of the agenda was INEC’s continued delay in recognising our new national executives, which has hindered the NNPP’s ability to participate fully in elections across the country,” Aniebonam stated.
He added: “We have repeatedly written to INEC and even demanded that elections be suspended until our issue is resolved, to avoid needless litigations that could affect Nigeria’s electoral process. This delay amounts to a violation of our constitutional right to political participation. Despite clear directives from the Abia and FCT High Courts, INEC has remained obstinate.”
The NNPP founder further insisted that electoral activities nationwide should be suspended until the commission reflects the correct NNPP logo and formally recognises the party’s leadership.
Other pressing issues on the table included the alleged hijacking of the party’s identity by expelled members, as well as overtures from presidential hopefuls seeking to use the NNPP platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
On whether the party would present its own candidate or enter into alliances, Aniebonam was emphatic: “We intend to field our own presidential candidate but remain open to collaboration with like-minded political parties. Unlike in 2023, our ticket will not be handed out to a lone aspirant. Every aspirant will undergo mandatory primaries, and candidates will be chosen democratically by our members.”
He also disclosed that the NNPP would soon embark on a nationwide membership mobilisation drive as part of efforts to strengthen its grassroots presence ahead of the next general election.
