The world of fashion has lost one of its most influential icons. Giorgio Armani, the Italian designer renowned for revolutionising the fashion industry, passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy. His company confirmed the news in a statement on Thursday, revealing that the designer died “surrounded by his loved ones.”
“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the statement read. Known for his minimalist yet luxurious approach to fashion, Armani was more than just a designer – he became a symbol of elegance and sophistication.
A Legendary Career
Giorgio Armani’s journey in the fashion world began in 1975 when he opened his fashion house in Milan. Quickly rising through the ranks, he dressed some of the most famous stars, transforming the concept of high-end fashion. His signature look, characterised by clean lines, sharp tailoring, and a refined, yet relaxed style, became the epitome of modern luxury.
Armani was credited with revolutionising the red carpet, creating iconic looks for countless Hollywood stars. His brand, however, was not just for the elite; through Emporio Armani, he launched a more affordable line that made his designs accessible to a younger, wider audience. In addition to fashion, the designer extended his influence into the hospitality industry, opening luxury hotels that reflected his aesthetic vision.
The Man Behind the Brand
Despite his advanced age, Armani remained deeply involved in his brand up until his passing. His company stated that he had “worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.” He continued to oversee the creative direction of his work, even as he faced health challenges.
Earlier this year, Armani cancelled his menswear show in Milan, citing health concerns, and missed the Paris Armani Prive show, which he explained in a statement: “My doctors advised more rest, even though I felt ready,” he said, adding, “I followed and oversaw every aspect of the show remotely.”
Tributes and Legacy
Armani’s death comes just weeks before celebrations were set to begin for the 50th anniversary of his fashion label. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from around the world. Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli paid tribute to the designer, calling him “a leading figure in Italian culture” and lauding his ability to transform elegance into “a universal language.”
“His understated and innovative style redefined the relationship between fashion, cinema, and society, leaving an indelible mark on contemporary culture,” Giuli added.
Armani’s influence extended far beyond fashion. He was also a recognised ambassador for Italian identity, helping to shape the image of Italy on the global stage. His work, characterised by simplicity and timelessness, will continue to resonate with generations of designers, celebrities, and fashion lovers.
As per his wishes, Giorgio Armani’s funeral will be private. However, a funeral chamber will be open to the public in Milan this weekend for those who wish to pay their respects.
“Il Signor Armani,” as he was affectionately called by his employees and collaborators, will be remembered not just as a designer, but as a visionary who shaped an era in fashion. His legacy will forever be etched in the fabric of contemporary culture.
