A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Segun Sowunmi, has declared that the 2023 Labour Party flagbearer, Peter Obi, remains the only authentic presidential candidate for 2027.

Dr. Sowunmi said this at an event organised by members of the Obidient Movement under the Cyrus Group and Free Nigeria Foundation, as part of the 2025 May Day celebrations.

The event, which was held at the Merit House in Maitama, Abuja, on Friday, featured prominent voices who discussed the worsening economic hardship in Nigeria, especially the impact on Nigerian workers.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Sowunmi stated, “I may be a member of the PDP, but the future of Nigeria lies with Peter Obi. He is the only genuine candidate; all others are pretenders.”

He praised Obi’s relentless pursuit of solutions to Nigeria’s problems, contrasting him with other politicians whom he described as unprepared and indifferent.

Dr. Sowunmi criticised the continued political dominance by the North and South West, lamenting the exclusion of the South East despite the presence of a viable candidate like Peter Obi.

He also urged the Obidient Movement and Labour Party to emulate Brazil’s Labour Party and work harder toward achieving meaningful change in Nigeria.

Also addressing the gathering, the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, emphasised that the Labour Party truly belongs to workers across all sectors — from construction sites to hospitals and security services.

She outlined five core commitments of the party aimed at restoring workers’ dignity, including living wages, labour rights, guaranteed healthcare and housing, and the enforcement of labour laws.

“Workers cannot continue to create wealth while living in poverty,” she said. “Any government that fails to improve the welfare of its people has failed, regardless of its self-praise.”

Famous poet Dike Chukwumerije also delivered a passionate address, encouraging Nigerians to remain steadfast in the struggle for change, even if it takes decades. “This fight is not just for us,” he said, “but for our children and future generations.”

In her remarks, FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe called out Nigerian youths and members of the Obidient Movement for their silence amid the country’s decline. “You are too quiet while the country sinks,” she told the audience.

During a heated Q&A session, Senator Kingibe confidently addressed tough questions from her constituents, offering direct and honest responses.

Dr. Moses Paul, popularly known as Dr. Mo and Director of the Free Nigeria Foundation, who coordinated the talk show, issued a strong warning to those expecting business as usual in the 2027 elections.

“Never again,” he declared, calling out FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to stop intimidating Abuja residents over elections. “Voters know where they stand and where they’re heading,” he added.
